Allium giganteum

Family: Liliaceae
Popular name: Ornamental garlic

Flower colour: purple

Flowering period: May – June

Average plant height: 170 cm

Planting depth to base of bulb: 20 cm

Spacing between bulbs: 30 cm

Its name - giganteum - is a good indication that this is one of the tallest of the allium species. Its leaves are striped blue-grey; unfortunately these are already withering back when the plant blooms. The ball-shaped inflorescence consists of more than 100 flowers and has a diameter of at least 20 cm. Placing small groups of 3 to 5 bulbs in a low-growing planting creates a very handsome effect.
